JUBA, South Sudan – November 5, 2025, the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has condemned the assault of a Magwi resident by security forces following his participation in a live radio program on Voice of Freedom 93.0 FM in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State.
According to reports, the man was attacked after expressing his views during a phone-in segment of the broadcast, where he suggested that roadblocks set up by security forces in residential areas should be relocated to reduce tensions and misunderstandings with the public.
Security personnel allegedly tracked down the caller after the show, arrested, and brutally beat him before detaining him at a local police station. He was later released without charge.
In a statement released on Wednesday, UJOSS President Patrick Oyet described the assault as a grave violation of the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan (2011, as amended), Article 24, which guarantees citizens’ right to freedom of expression.
“This violent act by the security organs in Magwi town is unacceptable and a direct attack on free expression. Such actions create fear among citizens and discourage public participation in media programs,” Oyet said.
The journalists’ union called on authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. UJOSS further urged security agencies to respect constitutional rights and to allow citizens and the media to freely express opinions without fear of harassment or intimidation.
